BLU ASHTON & DOG Zero - artists

"Wrath of Cernunnos"
Dimensions: 16"x20" print
Finish: 20x24 black matt in protective bag
Medium: 3D rendering/ 2D digital painting
Paper: archival quality, enhanced matt paper
Artists: D0G Zero & Blu Ashton
Date of Creation: April 2009

Price: $40.00

About the piece:
Cernunnos is a pagan Celtic god whose representations were widespread in the ancient Celtic lands of Western Europe. Cernunnos is nearly always portrayed with animals, in particular the stag. He is also frequently associated with a unique beast that seems to belong primarily to him: a serpent with the horns of a ram. This creature may have been a deity in its own right. Because of his frequent association with creatures, scholars often describe Cernunnos as the "Lord of the Animals" or the "Lord of Wild Things", and Miranda Green describes him as a "peaceful god of nature and fruitfulness"

In Newpocalypse mythology, Cernunnos is the Lord of the Beasts and their protector. He keeps to the forest and only shows himself when he comes to the aid and rescue of animals. He never speaks but has the ability to bring animals back from wrongful deaths. Humans who abuse animals are likely to suffer his wrath.

This piece shows Cernunnos with his legendary horns stepping out of the shadows seeking vengeance for the death of the wolf that hangs around his neck.

BIO:
Newpocalypse

Newpocalypse is the combined talents of D0G Zero and Blu Ashton. Set in an alternate version of an uncertain future, the characters of Newpocalypse tell a cautionary tale of man's disregard for the planet and the potential consequences while conflicting ancient forces battle around them.

D0G Zero's background is in 3D animation while Blu's concentration is in 2D art. Together they conceive the story lines of the Newpocalypse universe; build the characters and the environments in 3D, take digital photos and then finish the pieces off in Photoshop for the desired affect.

NICOLE LANDAU - artist

"Turquoise Tatoo - A Shaman's Dream"
Dimensions: 18" x 23"
Price: $ 120.00

Nicole Landau's "Portals" series transforms commonplace architectural elements, such as a doorknob and the elements that surround it, into a study of geometry, color, and composition. This work showcases the role of incidentals found either in the photograph itself or created by the act of layering.

Each doorknob is unique and holds the memory of life coming and going. Layers of paint, stray marks imparted to the object over time, and patinas from weather and quality of use, tell the story of the object's life.

Nicole Landau digitally produces a translucent layering of a single original photograph to reveal inherent patterns, geometry, or a new landscape. She uses the entire photograph to create the composition. The crisp vertical lines are the edges of the digital image. This lends an "architectural line" to the already organic shapes and movement.

Nicole Landau's formal training is in Architecture and Interior Design. She received her degree in Architecture from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1993. She now currently works and lives in Los Angeles, California. WWW.NICOLELANDAU.COM

Janet Bothne - painter

"Stopping By Woods To Paint"
Dimensions: 24" x 36"
Price: $ 200.00

"Words can have a deadening effect on images, and images can do the
same to words. An image can be stopped in its tracks by an
interpretation that shuts down the ongoing play it offers, and an
image can become a mere illustration to a text, cutting off the
imagination's trajectory.

So the project underway at Artamo Gallery, Paintings & Poems/Poems
& Paintings, which involves the pairing of images and words, is a
tricky one. Fortunately, it has been approached in so many
different ways, and draws on such strong material, that it can't
help but succeed.

Consider the series by Janet Bothne: As the artist found images of
woods emerging from her painterly experiments, she titled the
paintings ("Stopping by Woods to Dance," "Stopping by Woods to
Paint," "Stopping by Woods to Dream") in honor of "Stopping
by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost. If the canvases had
been studies in white and grey-or even in any vaguely
wintery or monochromatic colors-the effect would have been
deadly. But the canvasses are some of the most coloristically
variegated and saturated around. They refuse the status of easy
accompaniment for a well-known poem, opening up questions about the
woods we see depicted, about the poem, about the nature of sight,
and of representation." - Beth Taylor Schott, The Santa Barbara
Independent

Barbara Lai Bennett - artist

"Waterhorse" work on vellum Dimensions: 12" x 15"
Price: $ 120.00

I'm intrigued by the effects of accumulation, how smaller
elements collect to make a dynamic whole, whether they are from
nature's rich surfaces or from the cumulative effects of my
personal experiences which started in Hawaii and continue in
Southern California.

My work is made up of many layers of acrylic paint, medium and
collage material. Each layer shows part of itself in the completed
work, hinting at how everything coalesces to create the final
surface. In the process of working, I see connections and
references emerge, setting themselves apart from the background. I
liken it to weeding and uncovering a forgotten plant in bloom.

The resulting pieces contain many allusions to personally
significant images, natural forms and the dynamic forces which
underlie them.

Stephanie Mercado - artist

Hand painted watercolor etching
Dimensions: 4" x 4" image on 8" x8" watercolor paper
Price: $ 100.00

Stephanie Mercado is a native Los Angeles artist. Her world of dark-eyed caricatures exists within a sphere of psychological timelessness. Her eerie, disproportioned individuals are archetypal reflections of the absurd and the grotesque both present in the human condition. Her charicatured archetypes depict and exaggerate the foibles of human nature. She uses circus as the metaphor for life with a whimsical critique of society operating as the subtext of each artwork.

STACEY CAMPBELL - Artist/Painter

Title: "Too bright to see"
Medium: Landscape Painting on Copper
Dimensions: 36" x 12" mounted on wood frame 41" x 14"
Price: $ 250.00

I am an artist living in the Los Angeles area and have a Fine Arts degree from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. I have returned to Los Angeles and Art after a long hiatus in the Midwest.

Back when I was in art school I started painting on copper. Partly because it was new and unique and partly because I was completely seduced by its beauty. It was stable but also "alive" in that it tarnished and changed over time. European artists in the 1600s painted on copper but "prepared" it in a way that completely covered the copper to prevent it from changing or developing any patina. Personally, I love the plain look of copper. So the more bare copper that is showing, the better.

I've painted life-sized portraits on copper and they have stood up to the passage of time. The artworks have lived both inside and outside, meaning they've been exposed to the elements for a considerable time, and the elements have only enhanced the appearance.

I am currently painting landscapes on the copper and it seems to fit the subject matter perfectly. Occasionally the images can seem surreal when I am working on them but then I will see a sunset and be amazed at how well the copper adds to the image and how "truthfully" it captures the essence.

I also enjoy life drawing, painting portraits, large scale murals and working on commission. For additional pictures of my work please visit my website: staceycampbellart.com

JAMIE ANN YOCONO - artist
artist statement:

I have been designing and building furniture for 30 years. Although my styles have changed and my skills have grown, the philosophy that guides my work remains constant. I like simple, sturdy furniture that people aren't afraid to use. Delicate furniture requiring extreme care seems almost counterproductive to me. We should be able to coexist with our furnishings, rather than fear breaking them. Children, family pets and houseguests are constant reminders of this!

Some of the biggest influences upon my style include the furniture designs of the Japanese, Shakers and obviously, the Danish Modern movement. After reading James Krenov's trilogy of woodworking books many years ago, my work was forever changed. His writings taught me a great deal about wood grain and pattern management. I stopped using wood as simply a building material and began to see it as my color palette. Krenov also taught me that a piece of furniture can be dedicated to a single goal, be it housing a violin or displaying a single vase. I have been pursuing that “sacred space” concept in my work for the past decade.
In 1990, I began to study tile making in hopes of adding colors and highlights to my wooden pieces. Tiles suit my work for two reasons; they add a layer of functionality by protecting surfaces from heat or moisture and they provide a colorful focal point to my work.
